Rebuilding After Abuse: Shelly’s Story

This Autumn, Life is asking for your support to help provide safe housing and practical support for pregnant women and mothers facing homelessness like Shelly.

A safe home can be the first step towards a new beginning.

When Shelly came to Life, she was pregnant, fleeing domestic and financial abuse, and facing an uncertain future. With a safe place to live and support from Life’s housing team, she began to rebuild her confidence, regain her independence and create a better future for herself and her baby.

Shelly arrived at a Life House when she was around five months pregnant. She had made the difficult decision to leave an abusive relationship and needed somewhere safe to begin again.

As trust grew between Shelly and her housing support worker, she began to share more of her story. Following the loss of her first baby to SIDS, her partner’s manipulation had begun. Over time, the continued abuse had eroded her self-worth and left her feeling powerless.

When Shelly discovered she was pregnant again, she knew she needed to make a change for herself and her unborn baby. With support from a domestic abuse team worker, she took the first steps towards safety by moving into a Life House.

Building in confidence and trust

Life provided Shelly with a safe and supportive environment where she could begin to look ahead. She took part in the life skills programme, developing her parenting skills and building her confidence as a mother.

She was also supported in building relationships with a Domestic Violence Adviser and a local social worker. Given the difficulties she had experienced, her baby was initially placed on a Child Protection Plan. As Shelly made progress and demonstrated her ability to provide a safe and nurturing environment for her son, the level of social care support was reduced to a Child in Need plan.

Gradually, Shelly began to feel more confident in herself and her ability to be the mum she wanted to be.

As her confidence grew, she started attending playgroups with other young parents, slowly learning to trust others and build friendships. With support from her Domestic Violence Adviser, she took steps to protect herself from her ex-partner and worked towards putting safe arrangements in place for her son to maintain contact with his father and paternal grandparents.

Looking to the future

With greater confidence and the support of Life’s staff, Shelly also began to address the financial difficulties left behind by her abusive relationship. She obtained a Debt Relief Order, helping her deal with the debts that had accumulated during that time.

But Shelly’s ambitions extended beyond rebuilding her life. She applied to her local university and went on to begin a course in Business Management, taking another important step towards an independent future.

Shelly’s story shows what can happen when a mother has somewhere safe to live, practical support and the opportunity to rebuild her confidence. Her progress came through her own determination, alongside the support of Life’s staff and other professionals working with her.

Help more mothers find a safe place to rebuild

For a woman facing homelessness, an abusive relationship or an uncertain future, a safe home can make a real difference. Life Houses offer more than accommodation: they provide practical support, encouragement and the opportunity for mothers to develop the skills and confidence they need to move forward.

Your support can help more women and their children find safety and build a brighter future.

The Life Support Manager for the house said:

“We are here to hold and support the clients that come through our doors. We can encourage and signpost to support agencies, but the real work comes from the client and Shelly has made us all so proud. She has rebuilt her life for herself and the love of her baby.”
