In Memory of Patrick Bernard Barron

Patrick Bernard Barron, along with his devoted wife, Kay, dedicated years to supporting the most vulnerable. This is our tribute.

Bernard devoted his life to a cause he truly believed in, offering practical help, emotional support, and hope to women during challenging times. Bernard found great joy in seeing the generations of women and babies whose lives were touched by the Life house and help centre.

If you or someone you know needs help:

Patrick Bernard Barron, known to all as Bernard, devoted over five decades of his life to supporting women and their babies in need through his work with Life.

Bernard’s journey began in the early 1970s, inspired by his connection with Jack Scarisbrick (Life’s co-founder), when he and his wife Kay opened their own home to offer shelter to women facing unexpected pregnancies. This simple act of kindness soon grew into something much greater.

Through his deep commitment, Bernard and Kay went on to establish the Life house and care centre in Bath. He personally secured the property and arranged the tenancy agreements, ensuring that support could reach as many women as possible.

Bernard and Kay ensured that pregnant women had a safe place in their home prior to finding a Life house. Once the Life house was established, they oversaw and secured the property until a paid member of staff was sourced. Kay was affectionately known as the ‘house mother,’ while Bernard worked tirelessly behind the scenes and out in the community.

A key part of the house, was a minute Maple Tree that Bernard planted in the front garden, the tree insisted on growing and didn’t recognise that it was meant to be minute. Though it filled the garden, it was a beautiful tree, perfectly embodying the personalities of Bernard and Kay.

We can only continue supporting women in their unexpected pregnancy journeys with your help. If you can spare anything at all, women, children and future generations all over the UK will benefit from your generosity today.

If you or someone you know needs help:

Bernard’s contribution to Life extended beyond housing administration. He became a familiar face within the local community, engaging with members of the public and raising vital funds, and sourcing volunteers for the Bath house. He reached out to councils, doctors, and professionals, ensuring that women who needed support around their unplanned pregnancy could find it, and securing essential resources to sustain the charity’s work. If the Bath house ever needed anything, Bernard would find a way to provide it, whether through donations or his own generosity.

One of his most cherished traditions was visiting the house each Christmas, bringing gifts for the women and beautifully hand-knitted items made by Kay for their babies. Any extra items were shared with other Life houses or sold to raise funds, a tradition he faithfully maintained for decades, right up until 2023.

Those who worked alongside Bernard remember him as a deeply caring and dedicated man. As Lucie, who was a support worker for Bath house for 11 years shared, ‘he devoted his life to a cause he truly believed in, offering practical help, emotional support, and hope to women during challenging times. Bernard found great joy in seeing the generations of women and babies whose lives were touched by the Life house and help centre.’

Although the Bath care centre closed in 2016, support continues through the house in the city of Bath and services across the country, part of Bernard’s lasting legacy.

For 56 years, Bernard gave his time, energy, and heart to this work. His efforts ensured that countless women received not only shelter, but compassion, dignity, and support to continue with their pregnancy when they needed it most.

From all of us here at Life, we will miss you Bernard. Especially the phone calls with his opening line of ‘This is Bernard Barron from Bath’

We thank you, Bernard, for a lifetime of dedication and care. Your impact will be felt for generations to come.

We invite you to share messages of remembrance, light a candle, or leave a virtual gift on Bernard’s tribute page. These will be passed on to his family.
